What is camembert cheese?
Camembert is a soft-ripened cheese that originated in France and is named after the town of Camembert in Normandy. The cheese is made from cow’s milk and has a bloomy rind that is soft and velvety. When ripe, the cheese has a creamy and buttery texture, and a mild and slightly nutty flavour.
What camembert cheese should I buy?
When selecting a camembert cheese for this recipe, it’s important to choose a cheese that is ripe and ready to eat. Look for a cheese that is soft to the touch and has a slightly pungent aroma. You can also check the label for the date. If you want it fully ripe, use it within the last five days before the best before date.
Garlic Dough Balls Camembert Cheese Cooking Method
You can bake the camembert cheese different ways. We chose in this recipe to give you two options: the oven method and the BBQ methods.
The oven method uses dry heat to cook the cheese, while the BBQ method uses indirect heat from the BBQ grill. With the oven method, the cheese is placed in a preheated oven and baked until soft and gooey. The temperature is controlled by the oven, and the cheese is cooked evenly from all sides.
With the BBQ method, the cheese is placed in a cast iron skillet or on a sheet of foil and placed on the grill. The heat from the grill is indirect, meaning that it doesn’t come into direct contact with the cheese. The cheese is cooked by the hot air surrounding it, and the temperature is controlled by adjusting the heat of the grill. The BBQ method can give the cheese a slightly smoky flavour, which can add another dimension of flavour to the dish.
Both methods produce delicious baked camembert, so the choice of cooking method ultimately depends on your personal preference and the equipment you have available.
Can I use dried rosemary instead of fresh?
Yes, you can use dried rosemary instead of fresh rosemary in this recipe. However, keep in mind that dried herbs are more concentrated than fresh herbs, so you’ll need to adjust the amount of dried rosemary you use. As a general rule, you can use one-third of the amount of dried herbs in place of fresh herbs. So, for this recipe, you would use about 1 teaspoon of dried rosemary instead of 1 sprig of fresh rosemary. Feel free to adjust the amount to your taste preference.
What wine can I pair with this recipe?
Baked camembert with garlic and rosemary is a rich and flavourful dish, so you’ll want to pair it with a wine that can stand up to those bold flavours and complement them well. Here are a few wine pairing options that would work well:
- Red Burgundy: A Pinot Noir from Burgundy, France, would be an excellent choice. The wine’s acidity and fruitiness will complement the creaminess of the cheese, while the earthy notes will complement the garlic and rosemary.
- Chardonnay: A full-bodied Chardonnay with a creamy texture would also pair well with baked camembert. Look for a Chardonnay with notes of oak and vanilla to complement the cheese and the herbs.
- Rosé: A dry Rosé with a good acidity would be a refreshing and unexpected pairing for this dish. The wine’s fruitiness will complement the cheese, while the acidity will cut through the richness of the dish.
Ultimately, the best wine pairing for this recipe will depend on your personal taste preferences. So, feel free to experiment with different wines and find the one that you like best.
What other cheeses can I use instead of camembert?
Baked cheese is a versatile and delicious recipe, and there are many other cheese options that you can use instead of camembert. Here are a few ideas below.
- Brie: Brie is a similar soft-ripened cheese to camembert and is often used interchangeably in recipes. It has a mild, buttery flavour and a creamy texture that makes it perfect for baking.
- Goat Cheese: Goat cheese has a tangy, slightly acidic flavour that pairs well with herbs and garlic. It’s also a soft cheese that will melt when baked, making it a great choice for this recipe.
- Gorgonzola: If you’re looking for a cheese with a strong, pungent flavour, gorgonzola is a good option. It’s a blue cheese that will melt when baked, creating a creamy and flavourful dip.
- Feta: Feta is a salty and tangy cheese that is often used in Mediterranean cuisine. It won’t melt as much as other cheeses, but it will soften when baked and pair well with herbs and garlic.
- Cheddar: If you prefer a firmer cheese that won’t melt as much, cheddar is a good option. It has a sharp, tangy flavour that pairs well with bacon and herbs.
Ultimately, you can use any cheese that you like for this recipe. Just make sure to choose a cheese that will melt or soften when baked and that pairs well with the other ingredients in the recipe.
